4 Benefits to Enclosing your Carport with a Garage Door
Can I put a garage door on my carport?
In short; the answer is yes! You can put a garage door on your carport and enclose it. This is one of the more unique services we offer here at Affordable Openings Garage Doors and we do this by taking the existing structure and finishing it off with a garage door.
There are some great benefits to this type of carport conversion along with the wide versatility in garage door options depending on your needs, what the job requires and of course your budget.
Affordable Openings owner and founder Shane O’Sullivan has been doing this type of garage door installation for over 30 years. He is a carpenter by trade who completed his apprenticeship before he started working in the garage door industry, he has combined the two skill sets allowing us to offer these conversions and enclosures.
Benefits of enclosing your carport with a garage door:
Carport Security
Possibly the biggest advantage of enclosing your carport is ensuring security for your carport. Everyone wants peace of mind when parking their car, caravan or even boat on their property. Knowing that the public can’t access your carport and potentially more of your property is always a plus.
The Weather
Being able to protect your car and posessions from harsh weather conditions that may cause damage or premature wear and tear such as direct sun, heat, driving rain or hailstones.
Add value to your house
Another benefit is that you are putting a garage door on your carport! This gives you choice in the looks department while giving your house more personality and creating a more appealing façade while adding value to your house.
Ease of Access
If you choose to also invest in a garage door opener when you convert your carport. You’ll be able to get in and out without having to manually open the garage door every time you want to enter and exit your carport which can be annoying, especially if it’s raining!
You’ll also enjoy the safety benefits that come with an automatic opener such as the automatic safety reverse on the Merlin Opener range.
Types of garage doors:
When it comes down to the type of garage door you want to use to convert your carport, the options are luckily still varied. Your choice of garage door will ultimately come down to your needs.
If you are using your carport to store a tall vehicle or want to maximise your drive-in height, your best options may be a sectional garage door or a tilt garage door, however if you are using your carport to store your daily car, have a tighter budget or want a more basic look, the roller garage door would be a great option for you to look into.

What is involved in a carport enclosure?
Usually the opening will need to be created or modified to allow for your new carport garage door.
These modifications can include timber work to ensure the opening has everything ready for the garage door including sufficient and solid side room for fixing points and or creating a header frame.
We usually work with Timber when doing these types of conversions, though we have and can work with steel.
Depending on your needs and budget, we can finish off the conversion with options such as an infill which fills the gap between the roller door and the header and or cladding and flashing the exterior to finish it off beautifully.
