What to Expect When we Come to Install your Panel Lift Garage Door
Once you have decided a panel lift door is right for your garage, the next question is usually a practical one: what actually happens on installation day, and how long will it take. Here is what to expect, from the first measure through to the final test.
Before our Team Arrives
A proper installation starts before anyone turns up with a toolkit. The opening needs to be measured accurately, including the headroom, sideroom and backroom clearances that determine which hardware kit suits your garage. This is why we measure in person rather than quoting off a photo or a rough guess at the opening size.
On your side, the main job is clearing the garage. Cars, storage, and anything stacked near the opening or the ceiling above it need to be out of the way, since the installer needs a clear two metre zone under the door while it is being fitted. If you have an existing door being removed, let us know ahead of time so the job is scheduled with enough time for both the removal and the new install.
What Happens on Installation Day
The process follows a set sequence, and it is worth knowing roughly what each stage involves, even if you are not doing any of it yourself.
The opening is checked first, jambs plumb and the head level, since a door installed slightly out of square will bind or wear unevenly later. The vertical tracks go in against the jambs, followed by the horizontal tracks, which curve from vertical to horizontal and run back into the roof space. The door panels are then assembled and hinged together, generally starting with the bottom panel and working up.
The spring system is fitted next, and this is the stage that separates a professional install from a DIY attempt. Torsion springs are wound under significant tension to store the energy that lifts the door, and winding one incorrectly can cause serious injury. Our installers use the correct winding bars and follow a specific sequence, checking the number of turns against the door’s weight and size before moving on.
Once the panels are hung and the cables are tensioned, the opener bracket and drive rail go in if you are fitting an automatic opener. The final step is the balance test: the opener is disconnected and the door is lifted by hand to roughly halfway. A correctly balanced door stays where it is left rather than dropping or rising on its own. If it does not, the spring tension gets adjusted before the job is called finished, not left for you to notice later.
How Long Does It Take?
A straightforward single panel lift door, fitted to an opening that does not need reframing, typically takes somewhere between half a day and a full day. Add an old door removal, a non-standard opening, or a restricted headroom kit, and it can run longer. We will give you a realistic timeframe once we have measured your garage rather than a generic estimate that does not account for your specific install.
Weather rarely affects a garage door install directly, since the work happens under the existing roofline, but access issues (a full driveway, a tight side gate, limited parking for the trailer) are worth mentioning when you book, since they can add time to a straightforward job.
Why This Isn't a Do-It-Yourself Job
We covered how the torsion spring system works in our earlier post on what a panel lift door actually is, and it is worth repeating the key point here: the spring stores enough energy to lift a door that can weigh well over a hundred kilograms, and winding or adjusting it without the right tools and training is genuinely dangerous. Beyond the spring itself, an incorrectly squared track or an unbalanced door will wear out the opener motor faster and can cause the door to bind, jam, or come off the track entirely.
A professional install also comes with the balance test built in, so any adjustment happens before the door is handed over rather than after something has already gone wrong.
